אנשים גדולים וחכמים ממני כתבו כבר שהכבוש משחית. ישעיהו לייבוביץ' זה חברה טובה להיות בה בעיני. מנגד, עומדים אנשים וטוענים שוב ושוב שצה"ל הוא הצבא המוסרי ביותר בעולם.

אין לי ברירה אלא לפנות למקרה עדכני, החיילת הכי מפורסמת בצה"ל, עדן אברג'יל. כולם כבר שמעו על התמונות שפרסמה בפייסבוק, שלה בפוזות שונות על רקע עצירים כפותים. אם לא ברור לכם למה השפלת עצירים אינה מוסרית, אתם יכולים להפסיק לקרוא כאן. אבל היא המשיכה, הגדילה ועשתה.

eden"אני שונאת ערבים… בכייף הייתי הורגת אותם אפילו טובחת". בחורה בת 19 או 20 ששונאת עם שלם, והיתה טובחת בהם בכיף. הם כל כך לא בני אדם בעיניה, שברור שלהשפיל אותם זה שטות בעיניה. אם היא מוכנה לטבוח בהם, משל היו בקר אז למה לא להשפיל. שלא יהיה לנו ספק, אותו נוער שאנחנו מפמפמים לו לאומנות באוזן מילדות רק עושה את מה שהטלנו עליו.

אבל זה רק הדור הצעיר אתם אומרים? אז זהו, שלא. אלוף בן, באחד המאמרים המצמררים שאי פעם קראתי, כותב על ימיו כחייל.

אף פעם לא ראיתי "חריגים". לא מכות, לא סטירות, לא הטלת מום. אבל האזיק חד-כיווני, ואם מהדקים אותו טיפה יותר חזק, חצי סנטימטר, העציר סובל כאבי תופת.   …היו חיילים שקשרו את האזיק יותר חזק. עינוי קטן, מהסוג שלא מוזכר בדו"חות אמנסטי וגולדסטון. עינוי שנתון לשיקול דעתו של החייל הבודד, בלי הנחיות מהפיקוד ומהפרקליטות הצבאית. פורקן לשנאת ערבים בזמן משימה שגרתית…

פעם עשיתי מעשה גבורה שמאלני. שמרתי על משאית מלאה עצירים, שחיכו בשמש לקליטתם באנצאר. פתאום הופיע מילואימניק בריון, עם נעלי ספורט ובלי חולצה, וביקש לעלות למשאית ולהכות את העצירים. לא, אמרתי לו. הוא עשה תנועה מאיימת. לא היה לי סיכוי מולו בידיים ריקות. דרכתי את הנשק, והוא נרתע לאחור והפטיר בזעם: "בגלל אנשים כמוך המדינה נראית ככה".

עורך המאמרים של עיתון הארץ, העיתון לאנשים חושבים, לא ראה שום דבר חריג בעינויים קטנים, בגרימת כאבי תופת לאסירים, לפורקן לשנאת ערבים. בעובדה שהוא פעם מנע מחייל להכות עצירים כפותים הוא רואה "מעשה גבורה שמאלני" ולא התנהגות אנושית טריוויאלית.

באחד המשפטים האירוניים ביותר שבמאמר, הוא טוען:

"הכיבוש לא "השחית" אותי, וגם לא את חברי ליחידה. לא חזרנו הביתה להתפרע בכבישים ולהתעלל בחסרי ישע.".

מר בן היקר. אם אתה באמת לא רואה כל פסול במעשים שלך וחבריך, אם אתה רואה כנורמאלי ולא חריג מה שקורה לעדן אברג'יל, הכיבוש השחית לך את האמ-אמא. לך ולכל קוראיך שהנהנו בצדקנות כשקראו אותך. אנחנו כן מתעללים בחסרי ישע. ילדה שיכלה להיות הבת שלך עשתה את זה ומתגאה בזה בשידור חי בגלי צה"ל. מתפרעים בכבישים? לא נהגת כנראה בעשור האחרון.

הבעיה עם זה שהכיבוש משחית כל כך, היא שלא רואים את זה. כמו הצפרדע שלא תקפוץ מכלי מים שמחממים לאט לאט, עד שתתבשל למוות, אין נקודה שבה קופצים יום אחד וקולטים שהמוסר שלנו הלך. זה נעלם לאט לאט, בלי שמרגישים, עד שיום אחד השפלת עצירים נראית נורמטיבית.

Greater men than I have already said that the occupation corrupts. Prof Leibowitz is always good company to be in. On the other hand, many people here claim again and again that the IDF is the most moral army in the world.

I have no choice but to refer to a recent event. To those that missed it, the most famous soldier in the military is Eden Abergil. She uploaded to her Facebook account pictures of herself posing in front of bound and eye covered detainees. for the complete story, look here. If you cannot imagine why posing in front of bound prisoners is immoral, you can stop reading now. .

But she has gone further. in answering her critics, she said "I hate Arabs. I would happily kill them, even slaughter them""

A 19 or 20 year old girl who hates an entire people, and would slaughter them happily. The Arabs are so clearly sub-human to her that just humiliating them by posing in those pictures is obviously not a big deal. Have no mistake, if for years you pump nationalist and hateful propaganda down the youth's throats, they will do what they are asked to.

But is this a new thing? Is this just the young generation? Aluf ben, an Israeli journalist and the editor of Haaretz, wrote about his days as a soldier in Lebabnon in one of the most blood chilling articles I have read.

I never saw "irregularities." No beatings, no slappings, no maimings. But if the cuffs were put on a bit too tight, half a centimeter that couldn't be reversed, the prisoner suffered great pain

There were soldiers who tied the cuffs on too tight - a small torture that's not in the reports by Amnesty International or the Goldstone Commission. It's a torture that depends on a single soldier, without instructions from above or the military advocate general. An outlet for the hatred of Arabs during a routine mission.

I once performed a leftist act of courage. I was guarding a truck full of prisoners who were waiting in the sun to be processed at Ansar. Suddenly a reservist thug showed up, with sneakers and no shirt on, and wanted to get on the truck and beat the prisoners. I refused to let him on. He made a threatening move. I had no chance against him one on one. I cocked my weapon, he took a step back and, enraged, said: "It's because of people like you that the country is in the state it is."

An editor in Haaretz saw nothing unusual about torture, hurting prisoners, and violent outlets for Arab hating. The fact that he stopped a fellow soldier from beating up prisoners he considers a "leftist act of heroism" and not just plain humane behavior. In one of his most (unknowingly) ironic lines, he says

The occupation did not "corrupt" me or any of my colleagues in the unit. We didn't return home and run wild in the streets and abuse helpless people.

Dear Mr Ben. If you really see nothing wrong with what you and your peers did, if you see as normal what Eden abergil did, the occupation has corrupted you to the core. You and all your readers that have nodded approvingly at what you wrote. We do indeed abuse the helpless. A girl that could be your daughter just did it and takes great pride in it live on the radio.

The problem is that the occupation does corrupt. It does so in a way that is hard to notice. Like the famous frog that will hop out if dropped in hot water, but sit and boil to death if you heat the water slowly, there is no one point where you wake up, look in the mirror and realize your morality is all screwed up. It deteriorates slowly, unnoticed, until one day humiliating prisoners seems normative.
